October CC: Blending with Style

October 9, 2009

This is the colour swatch for the latest Color Challenge at DSO. Could this be the last Color Challenge at DSO?  The site is up for sale and as of this morning, there is no news of a buyer. Will there be a last minute reprieve for DSO? A high-drama, eleventh-hour rescue? I hope so.

I did some more playing around with pattern and texture using a great little applet that I discovered, Color Blender. How this works is you input any two colours using either Hex values or RGB. (See “Format” buttons at top left). For Kim’s CC, you can use the Hex button and simply copy in the code on the coloured boxes of your choice. It helps if you “Restore Down” your browser window and open up Kim’s swatch in Photo Gallery so that you can view them side-by-side to copy the codes over.

If you are copying Hex codes from somewhere else, you will usually see a # symbol  in front of the codes. For Color Blender, you can just ignore this. Select the number of steps you want the colours to transform through, and hit “Blend”. Easy! And you get the codes for the new colours, too – in Hex if you input Hex, or RGB if you input RGB. If you want to do more blends, you must hit the “Clear” button and start over. Erasing/replacing the codes doesn’t work!

In the spirit of “sharing helpful designer information inspires everyone – to everyone’s benefit”, I am sharing the link to the Color Blender. Did I mention that it’s free?

To make the papers below, I used another little applet I discovered to transform the colour graduations into vectors so that I could enlarge them to 12x12in size and then add other cool effects…but a girl has to keep some secrets!  😉
